There are frights for the kids, and some for the adults as well. Gather up your bravery and bravado, and face Southern WV’s spirits at these Halloween events.

Lewisburg (Oct. 25)

Escape the haunted museum halls, and head out into the cemeteries of Lewisburg. Learn what lurks in the graves… and what’s wandered out of them. Famous tales of the spirits of the Greenbrier Valley, as well as lesser-known tales of lingering ghosts.

Whipple Company Store, Scarbro (Oct 25 & 26)

This is NOT a haunted house, this is an historic, last of it’s kind, company store that is full of stories of life, death, tears and tragedy. Hear the stories, explore the dark corners and hidden spaces and go on your own paranormal investigation . . Must be 21.

Haunted BridgeWalk Catwalk, Fayetteville (Oct. 25-Oct. 27)

As if scaling the catwalk of the New River Gorge Bridge, 876 feet in the air, weren’t scary enough! The large metal rods of the bridge will be casting shadows across the catwalk, cloaking the creatures lurking along the path. You’ll be fastened in to a safety system so you won’t fall, but that won’t save you from the spooks and scares awaiting you!

The Haunted Trail - Little Beaver State Park in Beckley (Oct. 18-31)

Great fun for all ages, this tour will include ghosts and goblins and other creatures of the night slinking through the park as you walk the path.

Lake Stephens Haunted Trail (Oct 25 – 31)

For a scary good time visit this jump/scare haunted trail. $5 for Adults and $3 for kids 5-12.  Open Oct 25, 26 and 31 from 7pm to 11pm and Oct 27-30th from 7pm to 10pm.

Bramwell Ghost Walk - Bramwell (4th Saturday in October)

Take a tour of Historic Bramwell, once the home of more wealthy coal barons than anywhere else in the country. Their lavish town will be visited by ghostly characters, leading guest through the play-like tour that chronicles Bramwell’s history. Actors will speak for the spirits of the town’s past, recreating the thriving millionaire’s hub that it once was.

Hillbilly Horror - Bluefield (Every Friday & Saturday  in October & Halloween! )

The artisans of Gary Bowling’s House of Art have funneled their talents into creating spooky sets, bringing ghoulish characters to life and building an intricate haunted house that weaves through city hall’s jail cell. Are you brave enough to go behind bars with the spooks on the loose?

Race through the Booger monster’s twisted fairy tale lands, the Grim Forest, storybook homes and Wild and Wicked Wonderland. If you make it, try to find your way out of the 3D Haunted Circus as the floors, doors and walls move around you. But there are more obstacles before you’re safe: strap on your laser suit to battle zombies in laser tag, and leap aboard the haunted hayride.

Want something for the kids? Glade Springs has a one-day “N0-Scare- Trick or Treat Festival” for the kids to travel through the haunted trail and the 3D house, but with monsters that give out sweets and treats instead of tricks and frights.

Dracula: A Rock Opera - Greenbrier Valley Theater in Lewisburg (Oct. 25, 26, 31, Nov. 1-2, 7-9, 14-16)

See Bram Stoker’s classic come to life in a riveting and rocking way. If the forever cursed blood baron, the one and only Dracula, doesn’t get your heart racing, the upbeat score of the show will.

Tailgate Halloween - Beckley, WV (Oct. 26)

Take the kiddos out for treats from more than 40 local businesses for a safe trick-or-treat night, away from traffic, sponsored by the Youth Museum.

3rd Annual Spooktacular Family Fun Fest - YMCA of Southern WV (Oct. 26)

Bring the whole family and get active in this Halloween gameroom. It’s all about having a healthy Halloween, so no sugary candy, but the kids can earn way cooler prizes for playing.

18th Annual Second Creek Haunted Trail

This is a haunted trail that benefits the community as well as families in need. It’s the 18th year of operation and the trail sees upwards of 1,500 guests each year!

This one’s at the Whipple Company Store in Scarbro. This is NOT a haunted house of smoke and mirrors. In fact nothing is fake; this is authentic haunted history. Explore dark corners and hidden spaces in this old coal company store.

Lake Shawnee Haunted Amusement Park Guided Walking Tour

This location was featured on the Travel Channel’s Most Terrifying Places in America, the Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab, and ABC’s Ten Most Haunted Places in the World. Digital cameras and audio recorders are welcome. You must bring a flashlight.

Bridge Walk Haunted Tours

October 26,27, 28, $49 per person. Guests are encouraged to dress for the Haunted Walk and those who do will participate for ½ price, $24.50. Reservations are required. This is an outdoor event lasting approximately two hours. Some limitations/restrictions may apply.

Bridge Walk invites you, your family, and friends to walk underneath the New River Gorge Bridge. And who knows what lurks in the Bridge’s shadows and below? The Haunted Walk is a guided tour on the catwalk of the New River Gorge Bridge with “scaracters,” props, and “rigatronics” designed to intentionally scare visitors. You will be fastened to a safety system. Shrill shrieks, screams, and groans are just part of the experience that awaits the brave guests. This walk is not for the faint-of-heart.

Lewisburg Ghost Tours

Every Friday and Saturday in October, 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and children under 7 are free.  There is also a special Halloween Tour on Oct 31st at 7pm.  Spaces on the Halloween Tour are limited so please call to reserve. 304-256-8687

Haunted Trail

This trail is at the old Songer Whitewater at Miller Ridge Road on Route 19 from October 26-28. This haunted trail is filled with scary elements. Don’t miss this last weekend. Admission is only $3 and it runs from 8-10 pm. The proceeds benefit the New Haven Toy Project.

Frankenstein

October 26 and 27 at the Historic Fayette Theater. The theatre will be presenting a dramatic reading of Mary Shelley’s classic “Frankenstein” and the “Hitch Hiker.” Shows starts at 8pm and cost is $5.

Bluefield Walking Tours

Fridays and Saturdays in October. Tours begin at 7pm at the Historic Bank Lobby in Bluefield. $12 per person. For more information, call 304-887-7606.

Bluefield, West Virginia was founded in the late 1800′s and over the years has accumulated a rich history…in ghost stories. The tour will discuss the history of the town, but will focus on ghost stories of the historic buildings. Entertainment will be provided before and after the tours. Paranormal equipment is utilized on the tour.

Haunted Happenings in southern WV . . .

Lewisburg Ghost Tours– Friday and Saturdays through October 29th

Ghosts include coal barons, coal miners and children whose apparitions are still seen today.  Spirits will start to gather at 5pm at the Bramwell Depot and along Main Street.  There will be live music and food at the Bramwell Café.  Ghost Walk begins at 7pm. Tickets are $15.

MSU’s Forensic Investigation Assoc Haunted House October 12 – 31st

MSU’s Crime Scene House will be taken over for Halloween.  Located on South Kanawha Street in Beckley the Haunted house will be open October 12 – 31st (closed Sundays).  Times:  Mon-Wed 7-11pm, Thurs – Sat and Halloween 7 to Midnight.  Cost is Mon-Wed $8 and Thurs – Sat and Halloween  $10.

They heard about ATV rentals at Burning Rock and decided it would be a lot of fun, however, when they got lost in the deep words they encountered Zombies. Everyone knows what makes October in southern West Virginia spook-tacular.  It’s the haunted houses!  No, wait, it’s the festivals!  Right?

Actually, it’s both.  Plus, the colors.  We have great leaves.  Adds to the atmosphere.  Of course, when it’s dark out, the colors don’t matter, and all that crunching is probably letting whoever’s hiding in the woods know EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE!  MWWAHAHAHA!

Too much?  Sorry.  A blog isn’t the best place to scare people.  So we put together a list of some Halloween haunts that will do just that.  Plus, there’s a big list of activities that aren’t scary at all, right down below.

HAUNTED HOUSE CALENDAR
5th Annual Haunted Hotel:  This one’s in Mount Hope, WV, in the former Mountaineer Hotel.  Open October 15, 16, 22, 23, 25-30 from 7-10 pm.  $8 admission or $6 plus two can food items to be donated to the Raleigh County Homeless Shelter.   Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Little Beaver State Park Haunted Trail:  Oct 22-31st.  Dark until 10 weekdays, until 11 weekends.  $6 for adults, $4 for children 304-763-2494

MSU Forensic Investigation Association’s Annual Haunted House: Takes place at the Crime Scene House, 703 S Kanawha St. The house will be open from October 13-31st (closed on Oct 17, 20th and 24th).  Times:  Mon-Wed and Halloween Sunday 7-11pm; Thurs-Sat 7-Midnight.  Cost is $8 Mon-Wed and $10 Thurs-Sat and Halloween night.  There is a different theme every year at the house – the theme this year is “Scary Movies”.

MSU’s Criminal Justice Club will host “MSU Solve that Crime” a real life version of the popular board game Clue.  Dates are Oct 8,9, 15 and 16th at  MSU’s O’Dell Hall located at 210 Minnesota Avenue in Beckley.

Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze:   Each weekend in October, the Okes Family Farm in Shady Spring will feature a different event, such as pumpkin carving and painting, homemade apple butter to sample and buy, hay rides, bonfires and an acre-and-a-half corn maze. Tailgate Halloween: The Youth Museum of Southern WV will present the 24th Annual Tailgate Halloween in uptown Beckley from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, Oct 30th.
