Whitewater Rafting Season!
April 1, 2009 - October 30, 2009

Whitewater rafting season begins April 1 and runs through Fall. Whether you are looking for a float trip, a family adventure or an adrenaline packed whitewater run - Southern West Virginia's rivers have a trip for you.

First Fridays After Five
July 3, 2009

Spend a nice summer Friday evening enjoying outdoor & indoor live music, a tribute to West Virginia’s Blenko Glass, a United Way Fundraiser with an artistic twist and a taste of the Tour de France! First Fridays after Five will take place from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, July 3rd. This event is free to the public. Everyone is welcome! Don’t miss the fun!

Blues and jazz tunes of the local band the Jar Movers will perform at the intersection of Washington St and Jefferson St from 6pm to 9pm.

In honor of Blenko Glass, only antique glass production studio in the US, Plaid Eagle Antiques is presents an impressive collection of the old and the new. 117 East Washington Street, 645-0000.

Plants Etc. welcomes back Herding Cats. Don’t miss this talented local musical gathering! 102 S. Jefferson Street, 645-6910.

Harmony Ridge Gallery hosts a special art event for the United Way of Greenbrier Valley. Together with artist, Patsy Gullett, United Way is excited to present the first 30 editions of the “Lewisburg Academy Park Watercolor Sculpture”. Each framed sculpture will be for sale and 100% of the proceeds will support the United Way. 209 West Washington Street, 645-4333.

The Forum and the Greenbrier Valley Bicycle Club present “Be A Tour Rider”. Take a moment to experience being a pro rider by jumping on a bike similar to a bicycle used in the Tour de France. 200 West Washington Street, 647-3100.

Cooper Gallery hosts a reception for local artist Mark Cline. Most of his paintings depict local scenes around his home. 122 East Washington Street, 645-6439.

The Irish Pub welcomes the tunes of local Jimmy Costa from 5pm to 8pm, followed by Patrick O’Flaherty starting at 8:30pm. 109 East Washington Street, 645-7386.

Honnahlee celebrates their ten year anniversary. Stop by for refreshments and store-wide discounts! 117 East Washington Street, 645-6123.

Enjoy a blend of folk, ballads and old country favorites by “Pushing’ String” at The General Lewis Inn. 301 E. Washington St., 628-4454.

In the spirit of First Friday, The Lewis Theatre offers complimentary popcorn for their evening movie goers from 6:30pm to 9pm. 113 Court Street, 645-6038.

July 3, 2009 - July 5, 2009

Celebrate the 4th of July in southern West Virginia at any one of these fireworks displays!

Alderson – July 2–6 - Alderson 4th of July Celebration with Fireworks at Alderson High School football field at 10pm on the 4th and a second display at 9:45 on the 5th of July

Beckley – July 4 - Fireworks, 9:30 pm – Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center/Pinecrest area

Bluefield – July 3 – Fireworks at Bowen Field following Bluefield Orioles baseball game

Charleston – July 4- Fireworks at Power Park immediately following West Virginia Power baseball game

Fayetteville – July 2-5 - New River Gorge Heritage Festival. Fireworks on the 4th at Fayetteville’s City Park, 10 pm

Hico – July 3 – 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks at Songer Whitewater

Summersville – July 4 – Starting at 6pm, live entertainment with fireworks @ dark at the Northside Development

Three Rivers Avian Center Public Tour Day
July 4, 2009

Bring your family & friends! Admission is free but donations are very welcome. Three Rivers Avain Center's mission is to provide veterinary and rehabilitative care to WV's threatened wild birds. The Center will be open for free public tours from 1 PM to 5 PM.

John Henry Days
July 10, 2009 - July 12, 2009

The legend of how John Henry beat the steam drill has been told and retold not only in WV but all over the country. This three-day festival features unique events and demonstrations, children's activities and fabulous music entertainment.

Friday, July 10

  • 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. N 2 Blu and Hans Creek String Band will perform at the Great Bend Tunnel. Donations will be accepted. Bring a lawn chair. In case of rain, it will be at Talcott Elementary School Gym. Music sponsored by Ramey Automotive Group, Princeton, WV

    Saturday, July 11

  • 7:00am - Registration for the 4-mile Run and 1-mile Fun Walk at the Talcott Bridge
  • 7:30am - 10:00am - Breakfast,the Trinity Methodist Church basement
  • 8:00am - 4-mile run.
  • 8:05am - 1-mile Fun Walk
  • 9:00am - Craft and Food vendor Sales begin in Talcott
  • 11:00am - Grand Parade - Theme - "CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY" - Trophies and ribbons will be awarded at 1:00PM in front of the Post Office
  • John Henry Memorabilia Room opens immediately following the parade in the Methodist Church basemant.
  • Talcott Area Memorabilia Room open all day at Dillon's Superette
  • West Virginia University - Jackson Mills Exhibit
  • Clown & Children Activities
  • 12:00pm Lunch available at Fire Department
  • 1:00pm Inner-Tube Race at the Talcott Bridge Boat Launch. Registration forms available at Dillon's Superette. -- River permitting.
  • Splash and Dash for Cash immediately following inner tube race
  • Bridge Ball (ages 3-6), river permitting
  • 1:00pm - 3:00pm - Jimmy Costa performing music / storytelling at the stage at Talcott Fire Department
  • 3:00pm - 4:00pm - Hear the Story of John Henry - Fiction vs. Fact, presented by Bill Dillon at the stage at Talcott Fire Department
  • 4:00pm - 5:00pm - Big Fish & Bamboo Cutters at the stage at Talcott Fire Department
  • 7:00pm - 10:00pm - Esquires will be performing at the Great Bend Tunnel. Bring a lawn chair. Donations will be accepted. In case of rain, it will be at Talcott Elementary School Gym

  • 9:30am - Morning Worship Service. Great Bend Tunnel. Bring a lawn chair. Rev. Sam Haught of Talcott Charge United Methodist Church, Talcott will be the speaker. Special music by The Ministry of Buckner, Farley & Misty River. In case of rain, it will be held in the Trinity Methodist Church.
  • 11:00am - Craft and Food vendors sales, in Talcott
  • 12:00am - 4:00pm - Car Show . Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m.
  • 1:00pm - Wagon Rides to and from the tunnels
  • 4:00pm - Rubber Duck Race at the Talcott Bridge Boat Launch. Tickets available at Dillon's Superette, Thimble 'N' Plow, Talcott Station and other locations.
  • Visit the Graham House, constructed in 1770, and the Saunders One Room School House, one mile East of Talcott.

    Suessical
    July 14, 2009

    Theatre West Virginia presents "Suessical" at Grandview Amphitheatre. July 14th is the first permformance of twelve. Scheduled dates are July 17, 22, 25, 30, and August 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 19, 22.

    The Plot of Seussical mirrors that of "Horton Hears The Who," centering on Horton the Elephant's endeavors to protect the people of Who-ville. Many characters from other Dr. Seuss books, such as the "Cat in the Hat" are featured in this musical.

    "Terror of the Tug" Outdoor Drama
    July 24, 2009 - July 25, 2009

    Written by Jean Battlo, outdoor drama based on coal mine wars & story of the murder of Sid Hatfield & Ed Chambers at the McDowell County Courthouse. Drama will also be performed on July 31 and August 1st.

    July 24, 2009 - July 25, 2009

    A comedy about a group of women who were all members of a college swim club. For 25 years they meet at a cabin at the beach. The play chronicles their lifelong friendship. Tickets $10 for adults; $7 for seniors (55 and up) and students (12 and under). Performances begin at 8pm.

    High School Musical

    Theatre West Virginia Presents "High School Musical" at Grandview Amphitheatre. July 28th kicks off the first performance of five. Other dates are July 31st and August 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15th.
