West Virginia Historical Sites
West Virginia History and Heritage
Ours is an area rich in West Virginia history. Heritage sites range throughout this part of the mountains. Civil war, colonial life, and early explorers all helped shape our culture, as did our coalfields and railroads. You can experience all of it when you visit Southern West Virginia.
Scenic Highways and Byways
Touring historic areas by road is a great way to see a lot in just a little bit of time. As you travel over these national and state designated historic roads, it’s easy to get a sense of all those who’ve traveled these paths before.
Museums and Exhibits
History is on display when you stop in to visit any of our fascinating West Virginia museums. Our exhibits house countless interesting objects and stories, from artifacts and local lore to nationally touring displays and exhibits.
Coal Mines
Maybe the biggest part of our West Virginia heritage, and one of the best, is our coal mining history. Southern West Virginia sits on top of one of the world’s largest seams of coal, and the mines have in a large way created the culture of the mountain state as we know it. Now you can tour these incredible coal seams as real miners lead you underground. It’s a chance to experience history and a way of life the way as few others have.
Historic Main Streets
West Virginia’s historic sites and main streets preserve a sense of place like no other. Beautiful old buildings keep alive the architecture and feel of these scenic mountain towns for generations of locals and visitors to enjoy.
Railroad Excursions
Historical railroad tours are some of the most popular heritage tours available here in West Virginia. Ride the rails back in time as you journey across the coalfields, through the mountains, and into the deep valleys of our state.
